Overview

Win Turner, PhD, LADC and Jody L. Kamon, PhD will:

  • Review of research demonstrating positive outcome using Motivational Interviewing (MI) with Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT) patients and programs

  • Review & highlight the impact of new changes in MI to pronounce provider and patient collaboration:

    • Partnership, Acceptance, Compassion, and Evocation (PACE) cross walk of recent changes to MI and highlighting the processes and questions of the session frame

  • Provide specific MI skill illustrations of how to activate patients:

    • a) ask - offer - ask expressing concerns

    • b) menu of options

    • c) importance ruler vs. readiness

    • d) leaning into imagining the extremes

Win Turner, PhD, LADC is a clinical psychologist partner in The Center for Behavioral Health Integration. The Center for Behavioral Health Integration; a small collaborative of psychologists, social workers, helping evaluate and train in the behavioral health sciences. Dr. Turner’s primary focus is working as an evaluator, and clinical instructor in Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Effective Interventions for Youth Families, SBIRT and more general Healthcare Integration processes. Dr. Turner is helping to evaluate achievements across a diverse landscape of healthcare projects providing guidance, CQI and recommendations to increase client/patient health as well as leveraging findings to promote future initiatives. Dr. Turner is also helping as a part time senior content advisor on SAMHSA’s knowledge acquisition program (KAP). The program’s mission is to advance substance use treatment through the development of research to practice publications. In the past, Dr. Turner participated on expert panels for Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), the National Drug Court Institute (NDCI), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), the New York Times and Robert Wood Johnson.

Jody L. Kamon, PhD

Jody L. Kamon, PhD brings over 20 years of experience working across the behavioral health system in applied research, clinical training and implementation, and direct service roles. She is passionate about increasing access to quality services for individuals and families struggling with substance use, mental health, and other challenges. For over a decade, Jody has been engaged in both implementation and evaluation efforts to integrate behavioral health into medical, school, and community-based settings across different populations including the use of SBIRT. She serves as a national trainer in manualized approaches integrating motivational interviewing and cognitive behavior therapy and a regional trainer in motivational interviewing and SBIRT. Over the years, Jody has served as a technical assistance expert for the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration and a reviewer for peer-reviewed publications. She also provides outpatient treatment for individuals struggling with substance use and co-occurring mental health needs.


Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Rate the strength of evidence for effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT) delivery modality.
  2. Identify two changes to MI protocols disseminated in the "Motivational Interviewing Fourth Edition" Clinical Guide.
  3. Summarize steps for implementation of one MI skill developed to build collaboration in the face of client discord.
