Overview

Have you ever wanted to go for a long hike but feared you couldn’t do it alone? Have you and a friend ever wanted to go for a walk in the woods but were afraid of bears, bugs, big noises, bad bellies, or blisters? Have you thought about what you would do if you were hiking in a remote area and found a person wandering aimlessly, confused and bleeding? If these questions intrigue you, this first aid course is for you! In this course, we will offer hands-on experience in order to best support your leadership development and decision-making skills using our “Wilderness Olympics” format.

Learning Outcome(s)
At the conclusion of this course, (at least 75% of) participants, using a systematic assessment and decision-making process, will be able to confidently care for themselves and/or distressed people in a wilderness or austere environment.

Pre-Conference Learning
To participate in this learning activity, you must complete the pre-course videos. Credit for the videos is calculated into total contact hours for the learning activity.

Registration

The registration fee for Member Organizations employees (member organizations) is $100. Employees of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics are $75.

This educational offering is limited to EMTs, AEMTs, ED Technicians, MAs, LNAs, LPNs, RNs, and APRNs who are employees of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics and Member Organizations. Need-based scholarships are available.

Advance registration is required for planning purposes. Please make every effort to register seven (7) business days in advance of the learning activity. We will not accept walk-ins or late registrants on the day of the learning activity.

For registration questions, please call (603) 653-1234 or email [email protected].

If you need to cancel your registration, please call (603) 653-1234 or email [email protected]. Cancellations should be made seven (7) business days in advance of the learning activity.

Attention Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) Employees:
By registering for this learning activity, you are agreeing to attend. DHMC is allocating resources for your attendance and participation. If you cannot attend, you must provide the appropriate notification as soon as possible: ideally more than 24-hours in advance of the program start date. (In more emergent situations, an emailed explanation of the inability to attend, by either the registrant or a supervisor, is acceptable.) If you do not attend the activity and fail to provide appropriate notice, you may receive corrective action from your supervisor.

About the Course and Venue
Please note: We will be outside on the trails, rain or shine, for portions of both days of this course. You will be hiking, lifting, working as a team, and participating in hands-on Wilderness First Aid drills and simulations, which require the participant to act as a patient for physical assessments. Please make sure to dress accordingly and pack a backpack as you would for a day hike.

The location of this learning activity is off the grid, with minimal solar power and an outhouse for facilities.

Items you may want to wear or bring:

  • Hiking boots or other proper footwear
  • Dress in layers (appropriate for the weather)
  • Raincoat or other rain gear – weather dependent
  • Extra socks
  • Water bottle
  • Bug spray
  • Sun Protection
    • Sunglasses
    • Sunscreen
