Overview
Many children who require orthopedic care are transferred to the emergency room for treatment. However, not all of these transfers are actually urgent and may not require immediate medical attention. In this presentation, we will analyze the data on pediatric orthopedic transfers, including the types of transfers, the urgency of the cases, and whether they ultimately require emergency care. We will also examine the costs and time involved for patients and their families. Our goal is to provide guidance on when it is necessary to transfer orthopedic patients to the ER and when close follow-up with an orthopedic office may be more appropriate. Additionally, we will explore the possibility of using pre-transfer telemedicine screening as a way to reduce the burden on busy emergency rooms.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the potential levels of care and acuity for pediatric orthopedic emergency room transfers and their general costs (time and money).
  2. Explain pre-transfer screening criteria including the role of pediatric orthopedic telemedicine evaluation to effectively optimize the triage of patients.
