Overview

Have you wanted to get outside more in the winter woods but feared you couldn’t do it alone? Have you and a friend wanted to do winter snowshoeing or skiing in the remote wilderness but were afraid you weren’t prepared to handle emergencies? Have you thought about what you would do if you found a person wandering aimlessly, confused, or bleeding in the woods? If these questions intrigue you, this first aid course for winter wonderlands is for you! In the course, we will offer hands-on experience to support your leadership development and decision-making skills using our Wilderness Olympics format with simulated scenarios, creating hypo wrap, and building shelters. It’s fun, it’s outside, and it’s right here in your backyard.

To participate in this learning activity, you must complete the pre-course videos. You can access the modules here. Credit for the videos is calculated into total contact hours for the learning activity.

A waiver is required for this activity and must be emailed to [email protected] prior to participating in the activity.

Learning Outcome(s)
At the conclusion of this course, (at least 75% of) participants, using a critical thinking process that includes assessment, decision-making, intervention, management, succinct communication skills, and overall evaluation, will be able to safely care for themselves and/or a distressed person, in a cold/winter wilderness or austere setting.

Registration

Registration for this event is full. For questions, please email [email protected].

The registration fee is $75. Need-based scholarships are available. For information, please email [email protected].

Advance registration is required for planning purposes. Please make every effort to register seven (7) business days in advance of the learning activity. We will not accept walk-ins or late registrants on the day of the learning activity.

If you need to cancel your registration, please call (603) 653-1234 or email [email protected]. Cancellations should be made seven (7) business days in advance of the learning activity. There will be no refunds after this date. A $10 administrative fee will be retained on all refunds requested before the cancellation deadline.

Please note: We will be outside on the trails, rain (snow) or shine, for portions of both days of this course. You will be hiking, lifting, working as a team, and participating in hands-on Wilderness First Aid drills and simulations, which require the participant to act as a patient for physical assessments. Please ensure you dress accordingly and pack a backpack as you would for a winter day hike. Please review the list of items to bring.

Attention Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) Employees:
By registering for this learning activity, you are agreeing to attend. DHMC is allocating resources for your attendance and participation. If you cannot attend, you must provide the appropriate notification as soon as possible: ideally more than 24-hours in advance of the program start date. (In more emergent situations, an emailed explanation of the inability to attend, by either the registrant or a supervisor, is acceptable.) If you do not attend the activity and fail to provide appropriate notice, you may receive corrective action from your supervisor.

Please note that we provide a simple light breakfast and/or lunch depending on conference times: options are limited. If you have specific dietary needs, please plan to bring your food with you to the conference.
