Overview

Institutional AI decisions are made by committees weighing technical evidence, workflow, equity, cost, and legal exposure at once, and clinicians who can do those things separately are rarely asked to do them together. Dr. Perkins walks the machine learning lifecycle with the audience supplying each phase, then adds the governance layer: institutional AI committees, vendor evaluation, post-market surveillance, bias auditing, and liability. Participants then work in small groups as a mock governance committee, appraising a realistic vendor packet against a structured rubric and defending a recommendation.

Presenter

Randa Perkins, MD
Chief Health Information Officer
Dartmouth Health

Dr. Perkins joins Dartmouth Health from the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, where she served as the chief medical information officer and senior director of clinical informatics. At Moffitt, she led clinical IT strategy, guided technical and design teams, and built a clinical informatics fellowship program. She also served as an associate member in the department of internal medicine at Moffitt and as an associate professor of medicine at the Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida.

Earlier in her career, Dr. Perkins practiced as a family medicine hospitalist at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare and taught at the Florida State University College of Medicine. Her contributions to health informatics have shaped the field at a national level. She serves on the Health Information Technology Advisory Committee advising the Assistant Secretary of Technology Policy, is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Digital Oncology Forum, and contributes to the American Medical Informatics Association.

Dr. Perkins attended medical school at Florida State and earned a master of business administration degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She holds active board certifications in family medicine from the American Board of Family Medicine and clinical informatics from the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the complete machine learning lifecycle from clinical need identification through post-deployment governance, including the clinician’s role at each phase.
  2. Evaluate a realistic AI tool vendor pitch by applying technical understanding, critical appraisal, clinical workflow analysis, equity assessment, and governance principles.
  3. Formulate and defend a governance recommendation of adopt, reject, or adopt with conditions, articulating the reasoning clearly to a non-technical audience.

Registration

There is no fee for attending this Webinar, and pre-registration is not required. You will find the Webinar link above on this page.
