Mission, Mentors, Momentum: A Workshop for Intentional Career Development in Academic Medicine - Co-sponsored by the Geisel Academy of Educators and Scholars

This faculty development session explores how collaboration, mentorship, and personal alignment support career growth and well-being in academic medicine. Participants will develop a personal career vision, identify mentoring networks, and reflect on how their current activities align with their professional goals and core values. Through practical strategies, the workshop addresses how to navigate early-career challenges, build meaningful mentoring relationships across diverse perspectives, expand professional networks, prioritize opportunities, and maintain work-life balance to foster resilience, career satisfaction, and long-term success.

Presenters

Katherine E. Mason, MD is a board-certified specialist in pediatric critical care medicine at Hasbro Children’s. After obtaining her medical degree at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Dr. Mason spent several years in Cleveland, where she most recently served as director of subspecialty fellowship training programs at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. She is now the vice chair for education for the Department of Pediatrics at Hasbro Children’s.

Dr. Mason is an associate professor and teaching scholar. Her work has been published in several peer reviewed journals, and she has presented on the local and national levels. She is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Communication in Healthcare.

Cathy D. Shubkin, MD is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Dartmouth Health Children’s/Geisel School of Medicine. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Go Tar Heels) and medical school at George Washington University School of Medicine. She did a residency at Seattle Children’s Hospital, finishing at Boston Medical Center. Following graduation, her career has taken her from urban Federally Qualified Health Centers in Boston to rural primary care clinics in Western Washington as part of the Seattle Children’s WWAMI training program for pediatric residents returning to New England in 2008 to join the Department of Pediatrics as a General Academic pediatrician.

Dr. Shubkin is the Vice Chair for Education, Department of Pediatrics and is a general pediatrician with a focus on adolescent health. Additionally, she is a certified bioethicist, serving as an ethics consultant for the Dartmouth Health system. Her academic scholarship has focused on the intersection of adolescent health, adolescent decision making and medical education with multiple workshops and papers examining challenges and opportunities to help both trainees and teens (along with their families) navigate the complexities of medical decision making. Her current passion is fostering the ongoing professional development of pediatricians and medical educators.

1. Develop a career mission and vision statement to help steer career development.
2. Create a mentoring map to identify mentors, recognize gaps in mentoring, and make the most of mentoring relationships.
3. Implement the use of an alignment framework to navigate career challenges: identifying when to say “yes” vs. when and how to say “no.”
