Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School

Dr. Kate McHugh is the Chief of Psychology and Director of the Stress, Anxiety and Substance Use Laboratory at McLean Hospital and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Boston University. Dr. McHugh's research focuses on the nature and treatment of substance use and other psychiatric disorders. Her work is currently funded by grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and she has published more than 190 manuscripts and book chapters as well as an edited book published by Oxford University Press. She is a recipient of a number of awards, including the Ann M. Cataldo Excellence in Mentoring Award. Dr. McHugh is a practicing clinical psychologist, specializing in cognitive-behavioral therapy for the treatment of anxiety, depressive, and substance use disorders.


Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify one approach to differential diagnosis of substance-induced vs. independent depression.
  2. Describe one treatment model and one specific intervention for managing co-occurring alcohol use disorder (AUD) and depression.
  3. Discuss two common challenges encountered in the treatment of co-occurring AUD and depression.
