Overview

Dr. Pinto-Powell, inaugural Director for Learning Collaborative and Flourishing in Medical Education at Geisel, leads a dynamic session on effective small group teaching. Participants reflect on their motivations for teaching while exploring key competencies such as lifelong learning, well-being, and promoting diversity and inclusion. The Tuckman stages of group formation guide strategies for building psychological safety, accountability, and participation. Emphasis is placed on investing in group formation, fostering curiosity about learners, and addressing unprofessional behavior promptly. Collaborative teaching emerges as a powerful tool to boost engagement, enhance retention, and create a respectful, thriving learning environment for educators and students alike.

Roshini Pinto-Powell, M.D
Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth

Dr. Roshini Pinto-Powell is an internist and infectious disease specialist who has enjoyed the privilege of being a medical educator at Geisel for the past 28 years. Currently, she serves as the Associate Dean of Admissions at Geisel and as the Course Director for the On Doctoring course, helping learners find joy in the science and art of Medicine.

As a medical educator, Dr. Pinto-Powell teaches at the UME and GME levels and leads faculty development sessions locally and nationally. She has a love of teaching and finds the opportunity to help curious, bright, and engaged learners find joy in medicine, to be a gift she feels lucky to have. Every day, her patients and students remind her what truly matters.

In addition to her educational and administrative roles, her greatest joy is patient care. She shares that “I can honestly say that my patients have taught me more about medicine, life, and myself than I could have predicted!”

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Effectively facilitate small group discussions in medical education settings to enhance learner engagement and learning outcomes.
  2. Apply strategies for recognizing and managing group dynamics.
  3. Foster active engagement and psychological safety to support collaborative learning experiences during small group activities.
