George ‘Bud’ Vana, MD, is a general pediatrician, adult psychiatrist, and child psychiatrist. He is the medical director at Pathways Vermont with offices across the state as well as the Vermont Center for Resiliency in Chittenden County. He also operates the Bridges Neurodiversity Clinic in Burlington and answers phones for the Vermont Child and Consult Psychiatry Access Program. Dr. Bud is a graduate of Harvard University, and he completed medical school at the University of Vermont and his residency training at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He has worked to develop a telehealth infrastructure at the Lummi Tribal Health Center, as well as a child psychiatry consultation service for other tribal health clinics. His other professional interests include family-based psychiatry, acceptance and commitment therapy, treatment of co- occurring disorders, treatment of developmental disabilities, and integrated medical and behavioral healthcare. Outside of work Bud enjoys canoeing, hiking, and curling with his family.


Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss anxiety and anxiety disorder, including two symptoms of anxiety described within the DSM5.
  2. Describe two ecological causes of anxiety in individuals who have substance use disorders.
  3. Name one anxiety assessment tool used in the context of substance use disorders and one corresponding medication or behavioral treatment option.
