This one-hour presentation on cardiovascular health surrounding pregnancy will address prevention, diagnosis, referral and treatment options of cardiomyopathy when signs and symptoms present in the peripartum patient. Dr. Lila Martin attended Tufts University School of Medicine where she concurrently obtained a Doctor of Medicine and Masters in Public Health (MD/MPH) with a concentration in health economics. She did residency training through Harvard at Massachusetts General Hospital and fellowship in cardiovascular disease also through Harvard at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. During her training, she served as chief cardiology fellow and was a clinical fellow in medicine at Harvard Medical School. She has worked at MaineHealth for two years and is the founding director of the Women's Heart Health Clinic. She attends in the cardiac ICU, general cardiology service, and is an assistant clinical professor at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Emily Watson works with Maine’s Perinatal Outreach Program as the Outreach Coordinator for the southern half of the state, and she also works as a labor & delivery nurse at Maine Medical Center.  Prior to nursing she received her Master’s in Public Health which aligns with her drive to advocate for patients not only on the individual level but the population level as well. She is passionate about supporting the birth experience for all patients, particularly those with complex social or medical needs, and strives to empower nurses to work at the full extent of their scope.

1. Describe signs and symptoms of cardiac disease in the pregnant and postpartum patient.
2. Explain when to refer a pregnant patient to a cardiac specialist for follow up.
3. State ways to promote appropriate follow up of patients with cardiac conditions throughout pregnancy and during the postpartum period.
