Overview

Please join us as we explore the unique roles of birth and death doulas. Birth doulas, trained in the family's needs, provide non-judgmental support, guidance, and hands-on assistance during childbirth, recognizing its profound impact. Following the circle of Life, death doulas offer non-judgmental emotional, practical, and spiritual support, fostering dignity, comfort, and peace throughout the end-of-life journey and beyond. We hope you will join us for an insightful educational offering on the role of birth and death doulas.

Presenters

Amy McLaughlin, BS – Controller, Fluid Equipment Solutions, Exeter, NH

Amy operated a business called Family Doulas from July 2003 to 2018. She obtained her birth doula certificate through DONA in July 2013. As part of her certificate, she completed in-class formal observations and assessments from practicing doulas. In addition, during her years of practice, Amy provided education on the role of the birth doula.

Jessica Johansson, M.Div., End-of-Life Doula (NEDA-Proficient) – End-of-Life Doula & After-Death Care Educator, Sacred Journey Holistic End-of-Life Doula Services, Jaffrey, NH

Jessica has been working as an end-of-life doula since January 2022. However, she has been working with the dying (as a volunteer) since 1989, long before the profession gained recognition. Jessica received my end-of-life doula certificate from the University of Vermont in July 2022. This was an 8-week/80-hour certificate program. In addition, she passed the National End-of-Life Doula Alliance (NEDA) Proficiency assessment exam in July 2022, demonstrating proficiency in NEDA’s EOL Doula Core Competencies.  Lastly, Jessica is a UVM-trained companion animal end-of-life doula who supports pets and their owners.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the positive effect of birth and death doulas on individuals and families during these pivotal events in their lives.
  2. Describe two evidence-based practices that birth and death doulas employ within their prescribed roles and responsibilities that can improve the quality of individual and family experiences.
