Pediatric Grand Rounds - Beyond Opioids: A Palliative Care Toolkit for Every Pediatric Clinician

  • Overview
  • Register
  • Content/Tests

Date & Location
Wednesday, May 17, 2023, 8:00 AM - Sunday, May 17, 2026, 9:00 AM

Credits
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.00 hours), ANCC Nursing Contact Hours (1.00 hours), CME-Designated Participation Credit (1.00 hours)

Overview

Evidence is mounting that palliative care for children with serious illness improves prognostic awareness, improves communication and preparedness for end of life, and reduces symptoms and suffering. While pediatric palliative care is a recognized pediatric subspecialty, all pediatric clinicians should be prepared with effective and compassionate communication skills, knowledge of how to effectively treat pain and other symptoms (with a range of therapies, including opioids), and other skills related to the care of children with advanced illness.  This presentation will address this gap.  Topics covered include communication techniques throughout the illness trajectory and strategies (both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic) for managing symptoms, with a focus on pain.  Strategies for safe and effective use of opioids to treat pain will specifically be addressed.

Presenter
Christina Ullrich, MD, MPH
Clinical Director, Pediatric Advanced Care Team
Institute Physician, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Pediatric
Palliative Care, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Boston Children’s Hospital
Assistant Professor in Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School

Learning Outcome
At the conclusion of this educational program, (at least 75% of) learners will be able to discuss at least three elements that should be addressed when providing pediatric palliative care for patients with serious illness including use of opioids, use of additional medications and non-pharmacologic tools.
