Overview

In utero opioid exposure affects the newborn in a multitude of ways.   With this presentation we will address an overview of the basic epidemiology of in utero opioid exposure with a focus on the newborn period examining the typical presentation and the rigorously studied ESC (Eat-sleep-console) treatment plan for newborns affected by opioid exposure.   We will examine basic neurobiology of opioid exposure for developing infants and in particular develop an understanding of the effect of opioids on sleep architecture in the newborn.  Finally, we will discuss ongoing neurophysiology research to better understand the science with a goal of better newborn care.
