Medicine Grand Rounds - #MeToo: Addressing Gender Inequity in Academic Medicine

  • Overview
  • Content/Tests

Date & Location
Friday, June 5, 2020, 8:00 AM - Monday, June 5, 2023, 9:00 AM

Credits
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.00 hours), CME-Designated Participation Credit (1.00 hours)

Overview
Dr. Jagsi discusses the disconnect between the fact that women make up 50% of medical school classes but are poorly represented in medical leadership, scholarly publications and editorial boards. Her research shows that men and women are not hired, valued or compensated equally even when resumes are identical. Institutional change can include data gathering and remedial action, mentoring, and support of work-life integration for faculty and at the GME level. Examining the “Iceberg of Sexual Harassment” can generate the transformation of culture and climate for women in academic medicine.

Presenter
Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil
Newman Family Professor and Deputy Chair,
Department of Radiation Oncology
Director, Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine
University of Michigan

About our Presenter
Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil completed her medical training at Harvard and her doctorate in Social Policy at Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar. Dr. Jagsi’s medical research focuses on improving the quality of care received by breast cancer patients and her social scientific research includes research into issues of bioethics and research regarding gender issues.

Learning Outcome(s)
Participants will be able to discuss the nature and causes of gender inequity in medicine, define what constitutes sexual harassment and describe how to target systems-level interventions to address root causes of inequity and harassment.

Disclosure
In accordance with the disclosure policy of Dartmouth-Hitchcock/Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth as well as standards set forth by the Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education and the Nursing Continuing Education Council standards set forth by the American Nurses Credentialing Center Commission on Accreditation, continuing medical education and nursing education activity director(s), planning committee member(s), speaker(s), author(s) or anyone in a position to control the content have been asked to disclose any financial relationship* they have to a commercial interest (any entity producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing health care goods or services consumed by, or used on patients). Such disclosure is not intended to suggest or condone bias in any presentation, but is elicited to provide participants with information that might be of potential importance to their evaluation of a given activity.

The following Activity Physician Director(s), planning committee member(s), speaker(s), author(s) or anyone in a position to control the content have reported the following financial interest or relationship* with various companies/organizations. The Activity Director and Planning Committee member roles were resolved by altering the individual’s control over content about the products or services of the commercial interest by the Associate Dean for CME and the Department of Medicine Chair. The speaker conflict was resolved by validating the activity content through independent peer review by Kelly Kieffer, MD. All potential conflict(s) were resolved.

* Kelly Kieffer, MD ~ her spouse is a consultant for OcculoBio.

* Richard I. Rothstein, MD ~ has research support from Baranova (research grant to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center) and is on the Scientific Advisory Board for Allurion.

* Dr. Jagsi has stock options in Equity Quotient and has received personal fees from Amgen and Vizient and grants for unrelated work from the National Institutes of Health, the Doris Duke Foundation, the Greenwall Foundation, the Komen Foundation, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. She has served as an expert witness for Sherinian and Hasso and Dressman Benzinger LaVelle. She is an uncompensated founding member of TIME’S UP Healthcare and a member of the Board of Directors of ASCO.

Other planning committee member(s), speaker(s), activity director(s), author(s) or anyone in a position to control the content for this program report no financial interest or relationship* with any company(ies) or organizations whose product may be germane to the content of their presentations.

*A “financial interest or relationship" refers to an equity position, receipt of royalties, consultantship, funding by a research grant, receiving honoraria for educational services elsewhere, or to any other relationship to a company that provides sufficient reason for disclosure, in keeping with the spirit of the stated policy.
