Medicine Grand Rounds - Implementing Telemedicine in a Chronic Care Model

  • Overview
  • Content/Tests

Date & Location
Friday, May 29, 2020, 8:00 AM - Monday, May 29, 2023, 9:00 AM

Credits
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.00 hours), CME-Designated Participation Credit (1.00 hours)

Overview
Dr. Shah reminds us that telemedicine has been utilized for over fifty years in places such as jails and nursing homes, and explores why it has not been more widely adopted as a tool for patient care. He defines common terminology (sites, fees, laws) and explains why it can be difficult to set up a workable platform. In his Gastroenterology Motility practice, Dr. Shah demonstrates improved access and decreased “time to test”, both of which are positives for patients. He also discussed the difficulty with broadband coverage, reimbursement and decreased satisfaction with care decisions. He emphasizes the need for team engagement and exploring in-home devices for predicting a successful telemedicine practice.

Presenter
Eric D. Shah, MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine
Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth
Director, Gastrointestinal Motility, Esophageal, and Swallowing Disorders Center
Section of Gastroenterology
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center

About our presenter:
Dr. Eric Shah combined his MD and MBA programs at Texas Tech University and completed his residency in internal medicine at Cedars Sinai.  He was the inaugural Editorial Fellow with Gastroenterology, the flagship journal of the American Gastroenterological Association and his work focuses on helping patients have greater and more affordable access to GI motility care across large health systems.

Learning Outcome(s)
Participants will be able to define telemedicine and common terminology, describe the evidence and knowledge gaps in deploying telemedicine within chronic care models and recognize inequities in access to telemedicine.

The following Activity Physician Director(s), planning committee member(s), speaker(s), author(s) or anyone in a position to control the content have reported the following financial interest or relationship* with various companies/organizations. The Activity Director and Planning Committee member roles were resolved by altering the individual’s control over content about the products or services of the commercial interest by the Associate Dean for CME and the Department of Medicine Chair. All potential conflict(s) were resolved.
