Overview

This CME session introduces healthcare professionals to the foundational principles and real-world applications of Large Language Models (LLMs) in clinical practice. Participants will explore how these advanced AI systems structure and process information and compare their performance in diagnostic reasoning to traditional clinical workflows. The session will also examine critical ethical challenges—including patient data privacy, informed consent, and algorithmic bias—and how these factors influence equitable healthcare delivery. Finally, participants will gain actionable strategies to engage with and shape AI-driven innovations, ensuring that physician perspectives remain central in the responsible integration of AI tools into healthcare systems.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the fundamental structure and capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) in healthcare applications, including their impact on diagnostic accuracy compared to traditional medical practice
  2. Identify key ethical considerations in medical AI implementation, including data privacy, consent requirements, and potential biases that affect healthcare delivery
  3. Develop strategies for physician involvement in AI healthcare innovation, recognizing opportunities to influence implementation and guide responsible adoption in clinical settings
