Overview

In this seminar, advanced practice providers and physicians will acquire knowledge and skills about universal precautions in opioid prescribing in any clinical setting. We will also address the use of buprenorphine for pain management and opioid use disorder.

Learning Outcome(s)
At the conclusion of this program, 100% of learners will be able to discuss two changes in the way they care for some patients who have pain including identifying the components of universal precautions in opioid prescribing and increasing the use of buprenorphine in the care of patients with pain, complex persistent opioid use and opioid use disorder.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the use of universal precautions in opioid prescribing for pain.
  • Describe the unique pharmacologic properties of buprenorphine.
  • Describe the use of various formulations, indications, and contraindications for the use of buprenorphine to treat pain.
  • Identify patients that may benefit from the use of buprenorphine.
  • Recognize unconscious biases that may contribute to stigmatizing care.
  • Incorporate harm reduction and trauma-informed care strategies into your practice.
  • Implement strategies to increase confidence in prescribing and managing buprenorphine therapeutic regimens across care settings.
