Overview

Behavioral health issues have recently worsened and reached crisis levels in schools. School counselors are observing increased anxiety, depression, trauma response, and suicide ideation. Rooted in the pandemic and loss of in-person classes, school staff are reporting delayed coping and socialization skills and insufficient backup from outside behavioral health counselors and facilities. School counselors, nurses, and principals need more training to better support this increase in student mental health distress, including suicide prevention, evidence-based ways to respond to student mental health distress, understanding the array of inpatient and outpatient mental health resources. We will be using the Project ECHO model which is a proven educational model for spreading knowledge through case based learning to address these issues.
