Overview

When a patient endures a traumatic injury, treating their pain is a top priority. But what do you do when the patient already has an existing substance use disorder? In this panel discussion, key representatives across the continuum of care will share their unique perspectives on the challenges, pearls, and pitfalls of caring for the injured patient with opioid use disorder. In reviewing an example case study, you will gain insight from a pre-hospital provider, trauma surgeon, anesthesia provider, ICU nurse, social worker, and risk manager and learn strategies for successful care of this unique population.

Learning Outcome(s)
At the conclusion of this learning activity, (at least 75% of) participants will be able to discuss the unique challenges that a patient with a substance use disorder poses in the setting of traumatic injury, including the need for effective pain management, across the continuum from the scene to eventual hospital discharge.
