  • Register
  • Faculty
  • Content/Tests

Date & Location
Monday, September 21, 2026, 12:00 PM - Friday, September 21, 2029, 1:00 PM

Credits
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.00 hours), CME-Designated Participation Credit (1.00 hours)

Overview

This session examines the impact of racial, ethnic, and gender bias on assessment and evaluation in medical education. Participants will explore evidence demonstrating disparities in grades, narrative evaluations, honors, and career opportunities, particularly among learners from underrepresented groups. The session highlights how implicit bias and assessment practices can influence perceptions of learner performance and advancement. Presenters will discuss equity-focused approaches to assessment design, learning environments, feedback, and standardized evaluation methods, while identifying opportunities to improve the quality and fairness of assessments and promote more equitable outcomes for all learners.

Presenter

Alyssa Perez, MD
Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine
Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine
University of California San Francisco

Dr. Perez graduated from Jefferson Medical College and completed an Internal Medicine residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She received her Master of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She then came to UCSF for pulmonary and critical care fellowship. She spent her third year of fellowship pursuing advanced training in lung transplantation, cystic fibrosis, and advanced lung disease.

Dr. Perez is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. She specializes in the care of lung transplant recipients and patients living with cystic fibrosis. Dr. Perez is also a medical educator. She is an associate program director for the UCSF internal medicine residency and a fellowship coach for the UCSF pulmonary and critical care fellowship.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Define bias in learner assessment and how it can arise in clinical evaluations across specialties
  2. Recognize common patterns of bias in learner assessment
  3. Identify concrete strategies to reduce bias in assessment
