Scholarship in Action: Developing and Presenting Workshops – Co-sponsored by the Geisel Academy of Educators and Scholars

This session explores strategies for designing and delivering effective workshops that emphasize interactive, collaborative learning. Participants will examine how workshops can bridge theory and practice through discussion, problem-solving, skills development, and peer-to-peer learning. The session highlights the importance of clear objectives, diverse collaborative teams, adaptable planning, and effective communication when developing workshop proposals. Through interactive discussion, participants will identify common challenges in workshop facilitation and explore strategies to increase audience engagement, strengthen teaching expertise, encourage networking, and create meaningful learning experiences that respond to participant needs.

Kelly Kieffer , MD

Kelly Kieffer is a graduate of the Joint Medical Program of the University of California, Berkeley and UC San Francisco, and earned a Master of Science from The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. She completed her residency and chief residency at DHMC, then joined the General Internal Medicine faculty. Including her years in training, she has been a member of the Geisel School of Medicine and Dartmouth Health community for 30 years.

In her prior roles as Associate Program Director of the internal medicine residency and Program Director of the primary care track, Dr. Kieffer developed multiple enduring and impactful curricular innovations related to ambulatory practice and medical education. She had the privilege of working in Kigali, Rwanda, for a year through Geisel’s collaboration with the Human Resources for Health program, building and implementing new clinical teaching programs as part of an effort to re-establish the University of Rwanda’s internal medicine training program. Her interests as an educator include promoting inclusive learning environments and a goal-oriented culture of feedback, teaching relationship-centered communication skills, and faculty development for clinician educators. She currently serves as Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine and Director of the Department of Medicine Morbidity, Mortality and Improvement conference, Medicine Grand Rounds, and the DOM Professional Development Series.

Max Vergo, MD

Max Vergo is a graduate of Tufts University and Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, a Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship at the Harvard Program, and his Medical Oncology fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago. He worked for two years at Northwestern, splitting his time as a gastrointestinal medical oncologist and palliative medicine physician, before settling down at Dartmouth in the Section of Palliative Medicine.

Max has a passion for communication training at all levels of medical and interprofessional education to improve the conversations and goal-aligned care provided to patients living with serious illnesses. He is a Distinguished Faculty member for Vital Talk, Co-Director of the Dartmouth Health Serious Illness Communication Program, and Fellowship Director of the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Interprofessional Fellowship. Dr. Vergo serves the Dartmouth Health and Geisel School of Medicine community in his roles as Medical Director of Simulation-Based Education, Research, and Interprofessional Continuing Education, Associate Dean for Interprofessional Educational Practice, and Co-Director of the Geisel Academy of Educators and Scholars.
