Powerful social forces shape what gets taught, learned, and researched in American healthcare institutions. Academic freedom is under increasing threat, and healthcare is not immune. We will trace the evolution of academic freedom in universities, discuss its current challenges, and learn about tools to protect it.

Target Audience
This learning activity is open to employees of the Dartmouth Health Department of Psychiatry.


Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the difference between freedom of speech and academic freedom.
  2. Reflect on speech responsibilities for professors in the public sphere.
  3. Identify at least three specific resources available to protect academic freedom when it is threatened.

American Medical Association (AMA)
