Overview

The Endocannabinoid system (ECS), discovered in 1992 secondary to the discovery of psychotropic phytocannabinoid - 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is the largest neurotransmitter system found in both vertebrates and invertebrates. It is been found to play a homeostatic role in the regulation of inhibitory/excitatory neurotransmitter pathways; influencing diseases processes, aging, regulation of reactive oxygen species and more. The ECS is a crucial system within the body yet healthcare professionals lack formal education and knowledge regarding its physiology, leaving patients to make uneducated decisions or rely on dispensary staff with limited to no formal education. This NGR will serve to provide a general overview of the ECS to include the influence of cannabis and implications of cannabinoid therapeutics, thus advancing evidence-based practices in the setting of a knowledgeable, caring, nonjudgmental, and collaborative approach to patient centered care.
