Review of harm reduction strategies in general medical settings including:

  • Promoting effective treatment of OUD
  • Reducing stigma
  • Meeting patients where they are
  • Providing naloxone

Presenter Biography

As Chief Medical Officer of Lamoille Health Partners, Melissa Volansky, MD, brings the perspective of a clinician and physician executive to Lamoille Health Partners. She is respected by the Lamoille team for her achievements in defining strategic organizational goals that deliver quality outcomes. A physician at Stowe Family Practice since 1999, Dr. Volansky supports the clinical endeavors of the organization through leadership and coordination, while continuing to provide compassionate primary care to her own panel of patients. Dr. Volansky is an advocate for comprehensive family care focused on chronic disease as well as women’s health care. She utilizes a team-based approach to care for diverse patient populations, including those with complicated chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and substance use disorders. A graduate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Dr. Volansky completed her family medicine residency at Highland Hospital within the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Volansky is board certified through the American Board of Family Medicine and holds a VT State Medical License. An alumna of Stowe High School, Dr. Volansky takes pride in her 20 years of practicing family medicine in Stowe. Mother of two, she lives in Morrisville with her husband Shap, where they spend most of their free time cross-country skiing and keeping their cats company.


Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Summarize strategies for engaging patients in harm reduction reflective of patient stage of change.
  2. List safer substance use practices including provision of naloxone and sterile syringes.
  3. Locate harm reduction resources for patients and for providers.
