Professor of Psychiatry & Director, Division of Public Psychiatry
Larner College of Medicine, University of Vermont
Burlington, Vermont

Presenter Biography

Dr. Simpatico trained at the University of Chicago and serves as Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Division of Public Psychiatry at the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. He has served in a wide variety of clinical and administrative roles including Chief Medical Officer for the Vermont Medicaid Authority from 2013-2017. He was the recipient of the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Featherfist Humanitarian Service Award. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and past president of the Vermont Psychiatric Association. His decades of clinical, administrative, and public policy experience in the field of behavioral health have centered around the planning, treatment and provision of services to individuals with serious mental illness and substance use disorders across both inpatient, correctional and community- based systems of care. In 2014 Dr. Simpatico founded MTS Group, a spin-off company in partnership with the UVM College of Medicine in order to move he and his team’s work from academic grants to the public sector market place. In 2021 he was approached by Google who invited MTS Group to become a Google partner. MTS Group in partnership with Google is currently building a novel IT system called WayFinder which is supporting Judge Steve Leifman’s nationally recognized Miami Model for Jail Diversion. The Google Cloud-based WayFinder system allows information exchange, interoperability and AI decision support for treatment and service providers, outreach agencies, law enforcement, corrections authorities, veterans’ groups, and other entities that typically operate in isolation serving common populations.
