The 2023 – 2024 Trauma Webinar Series – Part Six: Analyzing Pediatric Orthopedic ER Transfers: Necessity, Acuity, and Proposed Screening

  • Content/Tests

Date & Location
Wednesday, February 28, 2024, 12:00 PM - Saturday, February 27, 2027, 1:00 PM

Credits
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.00 hours), ANCC Nursing Contact Hours (1.00 hours), CME-Designated Participation Credit (1.00 hours)

Overview

Many children who require orthopedic care are transferred to the emergency room for treatment. However, not all of these transfers are actually urgent and may not require immediate medical attention. In this presentation, we will analyze the data on pediatric orthopedic transfers, including the types of transfers, the urgency of the cases, and whether they ultimately require emergency care. We will also examine the costs and time involved for patients and their families. Our goal is to provide guidance on when it is necessary to transfer orthopedic patients to the ER and when close follow-up with an orthopedic office may be more appropriate. Additionally, we will explore the possibility of using pre-transfer telemedicine screening as a way to reduce the burden on busy emergency rooms.

Presenter
Rameez A. Qudsi, MD, MPH
Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon; Department of Orthopedics^, and New London Hospital, New London, NH; Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery*; Assistant Professor of Pediatrics*

Dr. Qudsi received his MD from a combined Harvard Medical School - MIT program in 2011. Following his medical education, he completed the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program, including a post-doctoral research fellowship at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and an MPH in Clinical Effectiveness and Global Orthopaedics. He then completed a fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedics at Nemours Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children, followed by a Hand & Upper Extremity fellowship at the Mary S. Stern Hand & Upper Extremity Fellowship in Cincinnati, OH, and a traveling fellowship in Pediatric Hand & Shoulder at the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, Philadelphia.
