Overview
This activity presents an overview of preventing and managing extravasations in patients receiving vesicant chemotherapy agents. Topics include: differences between vesicant and irritant chemotherapy; how to differentiate between an extravasation, infiltration, and flare reaction; etiology and risk factors for development of extravasations in both peripheral intravenous catheters and central venous access devices; factors affecting the severity of tissue damage in the event of an extravasation; signs and symptoms of vesicant extravasation; and current guidelines and best practices regarding preventing and managing vesicant extravasations.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the role and responsibilities of the nurse in preventing and managing extravasations when administering vesicant chemotherapy agents.
