Overview

Personal health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others. Organizational health literacy is the degree to which organizations equitably enable individuals to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others. Using plain language is essential for improving health literacy and, in turn, assisting individuals in understanding the information being communicated. Join us as we learn how written and spoken plain language improves safe, quality care and why plain language matters in addressing the challenges of limited health literacy.

About our Presenter
Sue is a national health literacy professional who has been working with DH for 5 years as a consultant and trainer. She founded and directed the Health Literacy Institute at the University of New England in Maine for close to 3 decades. In that role, she provided training across the country to government, public health, and healthcare organizations. At DH, she has worked closely with Licia Berry-Berard and the Plain Language Team Licia developed to increase awareness about and skills to address the health literacy challenge.

Learning Outcome
At the conclusion of this learning activity, (at least 75% of) participants will be able to discuss the use of plain language as an important element in ensuring health literacy for patients and families.
