Interprofessional Grand Rounds – Trauma-Informed Care in the Healthcare Setting

Most individuals who come under the care of large healthcare systems will have experienced at least one traumatic incident in their lifetime that may continue to influence their mental and physical health, disease management, and engagement with treatment and medical professionals. Trauma reactions can arise in medical settings, but healthcare professionals may not recognize these reactions or know how to respond to them effectively. This can leave patients feeling apprehensive or uncomfortable with their care and can interfere with treatment engagement. Additionally, healthcare professionals may feel frustrated, unprepared, or uncertain about how to effectively care for these patients, which can lead to compassion fatigue and burnout. This session will discuss how it is important for healthcare professionals to be aware of the effects of trauma in medical settings and applications of trauma-informed care to reduce risk of re-traumatization and enhance aspects of healthcare.
