Overview

This session introduces health science & professions educators (HSPEs) to the foundational skills of education research and scholarship. Participants will explore the broad scope of health professions education scholarship to identify where their interests align. The session emphasizes strategic literature reading techniques to shape and support research studies and introduces the "problem/gap/hook" heuristic for crafting effective introductions.

Target Audience

Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists, Social workers, Dietitians, Allied Health Professionals, Educators for Medical Education & Health Science Graduate and Master's programs, Residents, Fellows, and Educators committed to advancing evidence-based practices for educational research.

Participants completing the series will be positioned to contribute meaningfully to the scholarship of teaching and learning in the health sciences. They will also be eligible for Associate Fellow status within the Geisel Academy community upon completion of the entire series, or for Member status upon attending at least four (4) sessions.

Presenters

Tiffany Garrett, MSIS
Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth

Tiffany Garrett, MSIS, is the Associate Director for Medical and Health Sciences at Dartmouth's Geisel School of Medicine. She started at Dartmouth in April and previously served as Director of Library Services at Roseman University of Health Sciences in Las Vegas, NV, where she led the library through the initial stages of LCME accreditation for a new medical school. She has a Master of Science in Information Studies from The University of Texas at Austin.

Bridget Linehan, PhD, APRN
Dartmouth Health

Bridget Linehan, PhD, APRN, is a nurse practitioner and the Director of Advanced Practice Clinical Education and Research at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, and an assistant professor at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, where she teaches medical students and residents. She received a history degree and a nursing degree from the University of Vermont, and a master’s degree and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

In addition to her clinical work and research, Bridget has a strong interest in nurse practitioner education and teaching basic research skills in encouraging, attainable ways to nurses and advanced practice providers.

Abigail Konopasky, PhD
Northwell Health

Abigail Konopasky holds doctorates in educational psychology from George Mason University and in linguistics from Princeton University. She is currently an Associate Professor and the Director of Medical Education Research and Scholarship in the Department of Psychiatry at Northwell Health. She conducts critical qualitative and mixed-methods research in health professions education, with a focus on equity, Black feminism, and critical disability studies, using functional linguistics and narrative methods and theories of agency. She serves on the editorial boards of Teaching and Learning in Medicine, Perspectives on Medical Education, and Advances in Health Sciences Education.

  2. Critically evaluate professional literature to determine its relevance and usefulness in supporting their study.
  3. Identify the "problem/gap/hook” heuristic for writing an introduction.

Pharmacists/Pharmacy Technicians Account Setup
If you wish to apply for ACPE credit, you will need to enter your NABP ePID# and Date of Birth in your CE Profile by following these steps:

  • Log in to Dartmouth Health's CE portal.

  • From the My Account Menu select Profile.

  • Enter your Date of Birth (Month and Day)

  • In the Credentials section, select NABP ePID# from the drop down and enter your ID number

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click Submit

Social Workers (ASWB)
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Dartmouth Health is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 1.00 general continuing education credits.

Social Worker Account Setup
If you wish to apply for ASWB credit, you will need to enter your license number in your CE Profile by following these steps:

  • Log in to Dartmouth Health's CE portal.

  • From the My Account Menu, select Profile.

  • Ensure your degree and profession are accurately reflected

  • Enter the state license type, License #, and Expiration date

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click Submit

Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)
Completion of this RD/DTR profession-specific or IPCE activity awards CPEUs (1 IPCE credit = 1 CPEU).
If the activity is dietetics related but not targeted to RDs or DTRs, CPEUs may be claimed which are commensurate with participation in contact hours (1 hour/60 minutes = 1 CPEU).
RDs and DTRs are to select activity type 102 in their Activity Log.

All other learners may claim CME-designated participation credit. Consult your professional licensing board regarding the applicability and acceptance of CME-designated participation credit for programs certified for credit by organizations accredited by Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Education.
